shavasana
shavasana is an asana in yoga .
SHAVA means the dead
and
asana is a body posture in yoga.
the shavasana is a very simple body posture. you do not have to follow the usual rule of empty stomach for this asana and you can simply do it anytime.
the method.
take any comfortable position and initially a calm place (later you can practice this anywhere ) .
wear loose clothe initially . (later you can do it with any kind of outfit )
close your eyes.
look inside your body.
place your attention on the breathe first. suggests your breathe to be relaxed.
now take an inside look on the body closely one by one . you will be amazed how tense we are normally . suggest all the parts of the body to relax. again amazingly the body will be relaxed just wishing so.
if it does not get then it is probably because your attention on the outside objects or thoughts. so in this case go to your head first and suggest it to be relaxed. think that your head is relaxing.
this is the first part of the shavasana. and for first few days (or may be few weeks depending on the control of the mind , concentration) this part takes most of the time . few can reach this relaxed body state in 20-30 minutes . but after daily practice for 2-3 times a day you will require 2or 3 minutes to enter the second stage.
now place your attention at the toes of your body. it is surprising that many people never visited their body through inside attention. we always have looked our toes , ankles, knee joints thighs from outside. now its time to view it through your mental eyes inside.
carry your attention from toes to head moving upward inspecting slowly and patiently each and every element of your body without making any outside effort . most of the people feel many things at the first time.
when you reach your head it should be almost 20 minutes in this second part. if this kind of experience is new to you , you may start sleeping at this point. do not worry. this is not unnatural but you have experienced the natural process of sleep by paying attention.
after few days of rest and going into the sleep at this point you will still be aware at this point.
now the third part.
when you come to the head pay attention to the sounds of your body. the body machine is so complex and continuously producing so many different rhythmic sounds that you will be amazed .
now place your attention at the left ear drum. and just listen to the various sounds . catch one of them that fascinates you most . now you are perceiving the rhythm of your own body. just do not make any efforts . within short span of time you will loose attention of the body and its awareness . there will be yourself and the rhythm. this is why it is called SHAVASANA.
stages of shavasana
the first stage is to carry your attention from the outside world to inside your body.
the second stage is to feel your body.
the third stage is to carry your attention to a specific point in the body.
the last stage is to loose your awareness of the body.
the benefits
the first thing that shavasana does with you is , it creates an awareness of your own body. generally some small ailments are ignored because they do not create stumble in our day to day life. this awareness leads you to care . only awareness and attention and suggestion to relax get these small problems gone.
the body learns to relax systematically. it creates a revisit to the natural process of sleep that we used to when kids.
it trains you to sleep at your disposal. after practice you can sleep in a restaurant with open eyes without loosing attention.
it trains your body to co-operate with you. the modern lifestyle has made ourselves to behave cruelly with our body. we have learned to ignore the warning signals of our body. it re-enters the agreement.
the sleep disorders are hailed without making any other treatment or medicine.
the time of sleep initially increases as the body tries to recoup itself. then the time decreases. so you do not have to sleep so long. with masters of this yogasana one hour sleep is enough for a day.
it works on the depression , bad feelings, lack of strength, lack of attention, lack of concentration amazingly.
